1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago So Called Dollars

This web page can be used to search for so called dollars commemorating the 400th anniversary of Columbus landing in America. Most pieces are from the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. It does not include those with commercial advertising. For those, CLICK HERE. It includes everything in Hibler and Kappen's book, Nathan Eglit, and others. Use the "FIND"function of your browser to type in a word, inscription, or HK or Eglit number. Searching for World Columbian material is often problematic due to the same inscriptions being used over and over on different pieces. The many different die combinations can also be confusing. If possible, type a word or phrase into your browser’s FIND function that you think might be unique or at least common to only a small number of pieces. Skip from one entry to the next by hitting your RETURN button until you find the description that matches exactly. Inscriptions have to be typed in exactly with single spacing between words. Also be careful to include punctuation. Sometimes periods can look like commas and visa versa. Try typing both ways if there is any doubt. Dashes should usually also be included, but quotations maybe or maybe not. Underscores(low dashes) probably not.

Many of my entries are linked to an identifying image. I sometimes made composite images using obverse and reverse images from different pieces. For some images you can search through Tom Hoffman's World Columbian site. At some point in the near future, Jeff Shevlin and Bill Hyder with be publishing a new book on exposition so called dollars which will include most of what is here. More serious collectors of this material will want to buy the book. Their previous book on Pacific Coast Expo so called dollars was nothing short of excellent.
