So Called Dollar Sized World Columbian Store Cards

This is a listing and relative rarity tally of World Columbian so called dollar size advertising pieces(store cards). To do the tally, I looked through the same auction/mail bid sales catalogs that I used for my so called dollar tally(years 1970-2000). To locate as many varieties as possible, I also looked through Nathan Eglit's 1965 "Columbiana" listing, Rulau U. S. Tokens and Medals 1700-1900 third and forth editions, and Tom Hoffman’s World Columbian web site. I found 88 different varieties, and a grand total tally of 382 pieces. Only 10 of the 88 varieties tallied in the double digits, with Eglit555(my #31) being the most common. Of the 88 different varieties, I found only one or no examples of 42 of them. Compare this to my finding over 500 HK154s in my so called dollar tally. Fifty six of the 88 varieties can be found in Rulau, 38 in Eglit, 24 in both Eglit and Rulau, and 22 were found in neither. The businesses being advertised on these store cards are from at least 16 states, two as far away as Oregon and Seattle. All pieces combine a souvenir commemorative die(most found in Hibler and Kappen pages 34-46) with an advertisement store card die on the other side. Being advertising pieces, none are found in HK. I found only four that were "good in trade" if presented at the place of business(#11, #18, #48, #52). All the rest were advertising only. Sometimes a single store card die is found combined with more than one souvenir commemorative die - an example being the Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance die. It was found combined with four different souvenir commemorative dies. Unless otherwise stated, all varieties are made of aluminum, including two made of leather. Pieces are in no particular order except that the first 38 are all in order as found in Eglit. I have no doubt that there are more varieties than the 87 that I found(maybe as many as 100??), and certainly many more than my total tally of 381. Just to be clear, although my tallies can be used to help determine relative rarity, they in no way represent total mintages.

For various reasons, the following were not included: Rulau Chicago Chi 141, HK629, Eglit516, Rulau Chicago Chi 114, and also no calendars.

Following the description of each piece is it's location in Eglit or Rulau, a size, and my tally. Those that were not found in either Eglit or Rulau are described as unlisted. I have no attached images, although a few can be found HERE. Images of some of the others can be found in Rulau, Eglit, or at where Tom Hoffman’s World Columbian web site is now located.

The two most important sales that I found on this subject were Charles Kirtley sale #104(October 9, 1993) lots #1599-1648, and Presidential Coin & Antique Company sale #55(December 4, 1993) lots #1136-1199
